|The varied landscape of Thrace continues into the Rhodopi prefecture, a harmonious combination of valleys filled with sweet smelling broom, pine-clad mountains, forests, antiquities and sea.
The capital Komotini is built in a lush landscape and has a strong Anatolian colour. Situated along the Via Egnatia, Komotini was founded in the early Christian era. Traces of the Byzantine fortress walls are still visible at the entrance to the modern city. A visit to the Archaeological Museum is rewarded with a rich collection of exhibits that open a window onto the Thrace of yesteryear: art and religion through clay, gold and marble starting from four thousand years before Christ. The more recent picture, a continuum, is on display at the Folk Art Museum.
