Komotini is located at 790km from Athens and 280km from Thessaloniki. The city is connected to a great number of domestic destinations by the State railway network, while air-travel is facilitated through the airports of Kavala and Alexandroupolis. Regular bus-routes connect Komotini with Athens, Thessaloniki, Xanthi, Kavala, Drama and Alexandroupolis. Sea-travel is serviced through the ports of Alexandroupolis, Kavala and Proto-Lagos. Komotini is ideal for urban tourism, an excellent starting point for very attractive and interesting short trips to the surrounding countryside.

Komotini has three museums well worth a visit. The Archaeological Museum housing finds from the entire region of Thrace, the Popular Museum and the Ecclesiastical Museum. The sections of the Byzantine walls in the centre of the city attract much interest, as well as the peculiar Church of Panagia (Cathedral), the Ottoman Temples, the building of the Ecclesiastical Museum and the artisan shops of the historic fabric of the city.
