One of the most beautiful of its kind in Greece, the Aegean Maritime Museum was founded in 1983 by George Drakopoulos, the descendant of an old Mykoniat seafaring family. Housed in a 19th century traditional Cycladic building in the central Chora neighbourhood of Tria Pigadia, previously the home of the legendary Captain Nikolaos Sourmelis, the Museum officially opened its doors to the public in 1985. Its specially designed interior and verdant courtyard provide the venue for the exhibition of a carefully selected and displayed collection of objects promoting the maritime history and tradition of Greece, and especially of the Cyclades Islands, from antiquity to the present day. Visitors have the opportunity to see wooden models of ships, aquarelles, ancient coins, arms, rare maps and a large collection of navigational instruments.
