HELLENIC CULTURE AS PART OF OUR DAILY LIVES

The primary objective of the Hellenic Culture Organization (HCO) is the promotion of Greece's cultural heritage and contemporary cultural resources. Following the completion of the Cultural Olympiad 2001 - 2004, the HCO launched a new series of activities emphasizing the implementation of cultural events in Greece and abroad, digital application programs (exploiting the possibilities offered by the Information Society programme), as well as developmental activities (through the establishment of a network of museum shops in archaeological sites and museums).

The HCO's eight museum shops have been upgraded with contemporary displays and now are the equal of those found abroad. These shops offer a wide range of authentic copies of the most significant artefacts on display in Greek museums today. Applications of those same artefacts in a series of new products of high quality and aesthetics are also available.

These new products cover the purchasing needs of both Greek and foreign tourists for gifts and souvenirs from museums and archaeological sites. At the same time, they strengthen the message of timeless universality of Greek Culture. With their focus on a vast variety of themes drawn from the inexhaustible wealth of Ancient Greek and Byzantine Art, these products make Greek Culture a part of everyone's daily lives. These modern products have already become a favourite. Demand for these items is rising on a monthly basis, placing them third in sales income. This achievement is most noteworthy given that they belong to lowest-cost categories of products. Contributing factors are both the products' low cost and small size which makes them especially attractive to foreign visitors seeking to shop and carry.

Along with the introduction of the line of new products, the HCO developed the necessary e-commerce infrastructure to enable the purchase and sale of museum shop products through the Internet. Potential buyers can just click on www.museumshop.gr to pick the products of their choice for delivery at any address anywhere in the world.

Visitors to the eight museum shops or the web shop, www.museumshop.gr, may choose from among office supplies: mouse pads, pencil cases, pencils, notepads, stationery sets, bookmarks, calendars and a large variety of postcards. In the category of home items, visitors will find a large variety of coffee mugs, coasters, magnets, posters, silk screens and paper weights. The accessories category features impressive choices, such as elegant handbags, impressive scarves and easy-to-wear T- shirts. The new product series would not be complete without its selection of games, such as puzzles with depictions of ancient frescoes, or the "memory", a card game for children played with cards depicting symbols from the Phaistos Disk. The collection is completed with CDs and CD-ROMs.

The signal sent by the purchasing public's preference for new products has led the Organization to simultaneously strengthen its line with new items and adjust its policy to modern retail management. The HCO is achieving its goal and the Greek State is acquiring a new business profile with retail activity based on modern marketing rules. The Organization is continually processing the messages of its times, adapting itself to new conditions and demands, and swiftly and accurately satisfying the needs of the modern buyer in whichever part of the world he may be.
