Agios Efstratios
The small volcanic island of Agios Efstratios, also known as Ai Stratis, lies 16 nautical miles south of Limnos. The island owes its name to St. Efstratios, a monk who lived and died on the island in the 9th century. For many years it was used as a place of exile. Apart from its harbour, the island has just one village (Agios Efstratios) on its NE side. The monastery in the settlement has manuscripts in relatively good condition dating from as far back as the 15th century.
With picturesque bays, marvellous clean beaches - easily reached by boat or on foot - chapels and caves, Agios Efstratios attracts visitors wanting a quiet stay far from the hustle and bustle of developed tourist areas. The island can be reached by ferryboat from Limnos, Agios Konstantinos, Kymi (Euboea) and Kavala. |
